Rania Kataf

This lecture explores Syria’s enduring role as a crossroads of cultures and a source of artistic influence, tracing the movement and transformation of ideas, techniques, motifs, and craftsmanship from the ancient world to the present day. From the artistic legacy of ancient Syrian civilisations to the intricate traditions of Damascus, including the richly decorated interiors of Damascene houses, ʿajamī painting, wood inlay, and other forms of craftsmanship, the lecture reveals how Syria’s visual culture has been shaped through centuries of cultural exchange.

Moving beyond the idea of heritage as something static or confined to the past, the lecture considers how these traditions continue to inspire contemporary artistic expression and remain an essential part of Syria’s cultural identity. Through this journey across time, Syria emerges not only as a guardian of heritage but as an active and enduring source of artistic influence.

Biography:

Rania Kataf is an independent Syrian cultural heritage researcher based in Damascus, Syria. She earned her master’s degree in World Heritage Studies at the Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU) in Cottbus, Germany; and has a certificate in Art Crime and Heritage Protection from the Association for Research into Crimes against Art (ARCA) in Italy. She is the founder of Humans of Damascus and R’s Culture. With ten years experience in the field, Kataf has participated in research projects with various institutions including Barjeel Art Foundation Sharjah, The Pergamon Museum Berlin, Katonah Museum New York and works as a co-curator at the Japanese Palace Dresden Germany. Her work emphasizes the documentation and the safeguarding of traditional material culture, with a focus on oral history.
